MERRIAM, Kan. -- One person was taken to the hospital following an apartment fire in Merriam late Thursday morning. Just before noon, fire crews from Overland Park, Shawnee and Lenexa responded to a fire at the Georgetown Apartments at 72nd and Frontage Road. View the latest Weather Alerts in the Kansas City region on FOX4 First crews on scene reported heavy smoke coming from the second floor windows of a two-story apartment building with everyone out safe. Fire crews were able to get the fire under control in about 20 minutes. One resident was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and another was evaluated at the scene. The Overland Park Fire Department says one dog from the apartment where the fire happened is missing. OPFD says while the fire was contained to the one apartment, two other apartments had minor damage. The Red Cross has been called to assist. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
