BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) - Over 250 marching band members are part of Southern University’s Human Jukebox. They have been putting in the work for their biggest performance of the year, the Bayou Classic. De’Andre Waites is a senior at Southern University and will perform his last Bayou Classic this weekend. After long hours of practice this season, he said he is ready. “I just want to make sure I'm playing my heart out and I'm marching, knees high, high nineties. And just when it comes to that dance routine, bust the dance routine like I've never busted before," Waites said. Last year, the Bayou Classic celebrated its 50th Anniversary, allowing the Human Jukebox to give a memorable halftime performance. But it's time for more, according to the Southern University Director of Bands, Dr. Kedric Taylor. “We did an amazing job at the classic, you know, we had Fantasia, so we're looking to kind of go up another level this year,” said Taylor. Which means more work and many long days of practice, said Waites. “We're always on edge. We take risks," said Waites. "We're always taking risks, and especially from last year to now is different. You will never know with Dr. Taylor. Dr. Taylor is always on his toes. He's always come up with innovative ideas that you be like, 'Now, what made you think of these?'" said Waites. "So from this year, this year compared to last year, I will say, keep your eyes open because this is going to be a good show.”Now whether it’s the Battle of the Bands event or halftime of the football game, Taylor advised fans to pay attention to details. “I look at the quality of the sound of this band, the quality of the precision drill, the intricacy in the formations. A lot of bands don't take pride in that. We take pride in the small attention details, but people see a picture. We see the details in the picture, which makes the picture better," he said. And in regards to the performance that is top secret, Taylor said fans can expect a good show. “The most I can give you about what we performing, just know that is very well known and we're definitely going to put on a music production. I would like to call it a music production and we're going to take you on a ride," he said. A ride, Taylor advises band members to have fun with, especially this year.“I think what makes this year more special is the fact that these students have been through a lot this year and so for me to get to this point, nobody knows the intricacy of what these students go through daily and they deal with a lot. We want to finish strong. You want to finish the course. It's not how you start, but it's how you finish," he said. Bayou Classic 2024: Historic football rivalry between Southern University and Grambling State University A strong finish that Waites is already thinking of.“By the time I walk out of the field, I wanna be like, “'I did it I did it, we done. You gave it your all,'" he said. So as this Bayou Classic weekend nears, Taylor sends out a message. “Fans, get ready, get your pompoms so you can root the Jags to victory, but also make sure that the Southern University Human Jukebox, the often imitated, never duplicated none of these bands have ever been able to recreate the Southern University Human Jukebox performance," Taylor said. Those looking to watch the Human Jukebox perform can attend the Bayou Classic Battle of the Bands and Greek Show that will be hosted on Friday, Nov 29. at 6 p.m. and during halftime of the Bayou Classic on Saturday at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. Tickets are required for both shows.
