WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Thanksgiving Day is a dog's ultimate dream: from licking baking dishes clean of pumpkin puree to remaining on standby to take care of table scraps. As good as the holiday may taste and smell to your furry family members, the American Kennel Club (AKC) sent a reminder of what your dog can and cannot eat during Thanksgiving. Safe Thanksgiving foods: Sweet potatoes: Plain mashed sweet potatoes are a great source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin C and beta-carotene, according to the AKC. Though sweet potatoes are generally safe for dogs, avoid loading them up with brown sugar, marshmallows and maple syrup. Potatoes: No surprise here, feel free to share a baked or boiled potato with your dog. Try to save the loaded mashed potatoes - stacked with butter and cream - for your own plate, however. FBI: Beware of these holiday shopping scams Apples: Apples are a great snack for dogs, rich in vitamins and fiber. Be sure you remove the core before handing them over, as apple seeds can be toxic. Turkey meat: Turkey meat is okay to offer up as long as it hasn't been prepared with seasonings and is clean of bones or skin. Green beans: Whoever said vegetables are the worst part of Thanksgiving must not have been thinking of their dog. Green beans are a great source of plant fiber, manganese and vitamins, the AKC noted. Peas: Peas are a little trickier than beans, but are fine in moderation. Just like creamy mashed potatoes, however, keep creamed peas or casseroles for your own plate. Pumpkin: Pumpkin itself is a great snack for dogs - just be sure it's pumpkin puree and not the pre-spiced, sugary mix. Avoid these Thanksgiving foods: Turkey bones, skin and gravy Stuffing Casseroles Mashed potatoes Creamed peas Chocolate (goes without saying, but a friendly reminder just in case) Cookies, pies and sweets in general (anything that's "sugar-free" should also be kept away from your dogs) Alcoholic beverages Raisins and grapes Onions, scallions and garlic Ham Yeast dough Fatty foods Any food containing spices Once Thanksgiving dinner wraps up and plates are cleared, also be sure to properly secure any trash so your dog can't get into it.
