CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A Chesterfield mother is feeling grateful this Thanksgiving Day, celebrating the holiday after a fire tore through her home this past January. On January, Jan. 13, Chesterfield Fire and EMS officials received a report of a structure fire around 10 p.m. on the 13400 block of Pharlap Turn. Firefighters arrived to a large fire burning on Stephanie Reamer's back porch, which quickly spread to other parts of her house. ‘My son’s ashes are still in there’: Chesterfield house fire displaces 5 people, homeowner left devastated "The fire was completely doused for an hour and a half before it actually rekindled from the wind and a spark hit a leaf — leaf hit the ground, the rug and then it just took off on the back porch," Reamer said. Once Reamer was outside of the home, she realized her late son's ashes were inside. Thankfully, they were retrieved the day after. "When I look at the house, I feel sadness for what was what was lost, what we had here initially and what we built — but when I look to the future, and I look here now, I see positivity, I see a new beginning," Reamer said. Reamer's home is now in the rebuilding phase and will be completed fairly soon. "Probably early January [is when] we should be complete and able to come back to our home," the mother of four added. Reamer told 8News, after nearly a year of having to start over, she is feeling grateful for her family, friends and community. "To remember that gratitude and to reach out and to thank those that have helped us get where we're at now, which is going to be an even better spot than we were about this time last year," she said.
