(KRON) -- California Gov. Gavin Newsom granted a series of pardons Wednesday, including one for the co-founder and co-producer of a podcast about life inside San Quentin Rehabilitation Center. Walter Earlonne Woods launched the "Ear Hustle" podcast, which details the daily realities of life inside prison, in 2017. Woods was initially sentenced as a 17-year-old on Aug. 23, 1989, by the Superior Court of California of Los Angeles to 10 years in prison for residential burglary and kidnapping. A decade later, on March 30, 1999, he was sentenced to 31-years-to-life in prison for attempted second degree robbery and assault with a firearm. ‘Political stunt’: Tesla exclusion from state EV tax credit proposal pits San Jose mayor against Newsom "Mr. Woods and his crime partners attempted to rob a victim at gunpoint," Newsom wrote in his pardon. Woods had his sentence commuted by then-Gov. Jerry Brown in November 2018. He went on to submit a formal application for executive clemency in the form of a gubernatorial pardon. "He has provided evidence that he is living an upright life and has demonstrated his fitness for restoration of civic rights and responsibilities," Newsom said. The Board of Parole, Newsom went on to say, reviewed Woods' application for clemency and voted to recommend a pardon grant. The California Supreme Court also reviewed his application and made a recommendation for granting a pardon, which is required by the state constitution for cases in which the applicant has been convicted of more than one felony. "This act of clemency for Mr. Woods does not minimize or forgive his conduct or the harm it caused," Newsom said. "It does recognize the work he has done since to transform himself." Woods was one of 19 people that Newsom granted "full and unconditional" pardons to on Wednesday. Woods' "Ear Hustle" podcast was named a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in audio reporting in 2020 and received an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award in 2021.
