BROCKPORT, N.Y. (WROC) — If a dual-threat quarterback is one who can pass and throw, Aquinas sophomore Trent Buttles was a triple-threat on Friday night in the Far West Regionals. Buttles had an efficient day throwing the ball, ran for two touchdowns, and had two interceptions on defense playing safety to lift Aquinas to a 21-19 lead over Lancaster (VI) to power the Li'l Irish into the state semifinals. His first interception was a 96-yard pick-six on fourth down in the fourth quarter. His second was on a Hail Mary on the final play of the game to secure the victory. The first half of the game was particularly rainy on the campus of SUNY Brockport, leading to some troubles early for the Aquinas offense. Aquinas fumbled the ball on two of their first three possessions and Lancaster turned each turnover into a touchdown. Andrew Moberg had short rushing touchdowns on both scoring drives to give the Legends a 13-0 lead. The first extra point missed, hitting the upright, and the second extra point hit the upright and bounced in. Aquinas got on the board with just over six minutes to go in the first half, with Buttles rushing in a four-yard touchdown. Buttles had a key fourth-down conversion to Alexis Rosado on the drive. Lancaster drove into Aquinas territory on the ensuing drive, but they turned the ball over on downs. It was the third time in the first half that Aquinas got a fourth-down stop deep in their own territory. The game remained 13-7 Lancaster at the half. Aquinas marched down the field on the first drive of the second half, with Buttles scrambling in for a 10-yard touchdown run. Lancaster drove into Aquinas' territory looking to take the lead early in the fourth quarter. Facing fourth-and-goal from the six, the Legends kept their offense on the field, not trusting their kicker after his early mishaps. Lancaster went with a quick pass to the right and Buttles read it perfectly, intercepting the ball and taking it 96 yards for the touchdown. It was his second pick-six of the postseason, his first clinching the semifinal victory over McQuaid. Aquinas kicked the extra point, making it a 21-13 game. Still down only one score, Lancaster drove down the field and Daniel Ahearn scored a 9-yard touchdown to make it 21-19. John Gang took a direct snap on the ensuing two-point conversion, but his elbow touched down before he was able to dive the ball across the goal line. A host of Aquinas defenders met him at the line of scrimmage. Lancaster got the ball back with just under four minutes to play and quickly drove into the red zone. Lancaster appeared to score the go-ahead touchdown, but the play was called back for an ineligible man downfield. Facing fourth down at the 16-yard line, Krupa's pass fell incomplete with 365 seconds left. Aquinas was unable to run out the clock and got one last chance for a Hail Mary pass, but Buttles intercepted it to seal the game. Aquinas (10-2) advances to the state semifinals where they will play on Saturday, November 30th at 6:00 p.m. at Vestal High School. They are now two games away from a state title, seeking their first state championship since 2018. The Li'l Irish are the last Section V team to win a state title in football. Pembroke won 8-man regional titles the past two seasons. The Li'l Irish will likely play the defending state champs, Christian Brothers Academy Syracuse. CBA is undefeated this season and is ranked number two in the state, first among teams in the NYSPHSAA bracket. CBA will take on Elmira/Southside on Saturday, November 23rd at 6:00 p.m. Elmira is not ranked in the latest Class AA poll.
