Avon football falls to topranked CSP in Far West Regionals
Nov 22, 2024
Class D: Clymer/Sherman/Panama 48 (VI), Avon 14
Avon entered the Far West Regionals undefeated, ranked second in the state with their closes Section V win coming by 26 points.
Top-ranked CSP proved to be a new animal entirely, as they blew past the River Hawks on a rainy evening at SUNY Brockport for a 48-14 win.
CSP scored a touchdown on their first possession of the game to take a 6-0 lead.
The River Hawks' defense did a good job keeping Avon in the game, as they had two stops on fourth down with CSP in Avon territory.
With just over eight minutes left in the game, the Wolfpack broke through again as Tate Catanese broke two tackles while scrambling right and heaved it downfield for a 42-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.
Avon responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive on the ensuing possession. Wesley Farley and Kal Dolgos had long runs on the drive. Avon went to the air for their touchdown as Dolgos connected with Blayden Borsching for a 15-yard touchdown to make it 14-7 with 4:16 left in the first half.
However, the rest of the game was all CSP. The Wolfpack scored twice before halftime, with Catanese scoring on a QB sneak and throwing another touchdown pass to Brink.
Avon fumbled the ball on their first two possession of the second half, with CSP taking advantage and scoring touchdowns on both drives to go up 42-7. That was the score at the end of the third quarter, with both teams scoring touchdowns in the fourth quarter for a 48-14 final score.
This was Avon's second time in the Far West Regionals. They lost to Randolph in 2012. The River Hawks' season ends with an 11-1 record.
