Catholic Charities and the Barrett Foundation were chosen by the Day One Families Fund which is financed by Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon. They will receive $6 million over five years. The Day One Families Fund is for non-profit charities that are helping families experiencing homelessness.
Catholic Charities will be getting $5 million. They said they'll be able to help a lot more families. "What that's gonna look like for us is increased services… Expansion of services for self-sufficiency and housing work. So, we will be able to help 275 families that we wouldn't have been able to help otherwise over the next 5 years going from being unhoused and experiencing homelessness to a safe place," said Jared Weatherholtz, Chief Program Officer from Catholic Charities.
Catholic Charities said they'll also be able to increase their staffing. Meanwhile, the Barrett Foundation has received $1.25 million and will be using the money for a similar cause. "We'll be using that money to hire a new intensive housing and employment navigator who will be going out into the community with the women which is something we don't do in our shelter," said Cory Lee CEO of Barrett Foundation.
With just one location in town, Lee said they will continue to focus on providing families with financial assistance. "The funds will also be used to provide initial startup housing costs such as deposits, first month and last month's rent, utility deposits, and things like that," said Lee.
This will be the seventh year of The Day One Families Fund. Only two New Mexico groups have been selected before this year. Those were HopeWorks in 2019 and Mesilla Valley Community of Hope in 2021.
