CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- For some, Thanksgiving travel is around the corner, but the holiday cheer could quickly turn to tragedy if drivers aren't careful. Virginia State Police are sounding the alarm, urging drivers to buckle up and drive responsibly. "It's a decision that takes two seconds," said Matthew Demlein, a spokesperson for Virginia State Police. Last year in Virginia, five of the 11 traffic deaths during the Thanksgiving holiday counting period involved people who weren't wearing a seatbelt. That number was a reduction from 19 in 2022. Common excuses include discomfort, forgetfulness, or the belief that they won't be in an accident. However, Demlein says the reality is that accidents can happen to anyone, at any time. "It's super important if you're in a crash," he said. "If you're wearing a seatbelt, it increases your chances of getting out of that crash alive and safe." Demlein urges everyone in the vehicle to buckle up. It's a quick and easy way to significantly increase safety. "Make sure not only you have it on -- your passenger and your kids, anyone who you've got traveling with you. It takes minimal time and it makes a huge difference," said Demlein. Virginia State Police will be participating in Operation Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort, known as C.A.R.E. State Troopers will be increasing their presence on Virginia’s roads during the five-day holiday. The period starts at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, and runs through 11:59 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024.
