Stop Shop stores 'largely recovered' from cyberattack

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Stop & Shop stores are "stocked and largely recovered" from an unspecified cybersecurity issue that impacted product delivery.
In a statement to 12 News, Stop & Shop's Caroline Medeiros said Medeiros confirmed that stores have been racing to stock shelves ahead of Thanksgiving.
"We recognize the high trust our customers place in us to nourish their families and our communities, and we deeply appreciate their patience as we worked to restock our shelves," Medeiros said. "Our stores are stocked and ready to serve our shoppers in advance of their holiday celebrations."
This comes two weeks after Stop & Shop's parent company, Ahold Delhaize USA, announced that it was the target of a cyberattack.
Ahold Delhaize USA said it alerted law enforcement, hired external cybersecurity experts and began investigating "immediately upon detecting the issue."
"Our teams are taking steps to assess and mitigate the issue," Ahold Delhaize USA explained at the time. "This includes taking some systems offline to help protect them."
Ahold Delhaize USA's mitigation efforts impacted its supply-chain and product delivery, leaving store shelves mostly bare for days on end. It also rendered some of Stop & Shop's technology temporarily inoperable, such as the electronic produce scales and, in some cases, popular payment methods.
Though store operations are slowly returning to normal, Medeiros said shoppers should still expect "limited availability" of certain products.
Medeiros said Stop & Shop will be thanking its loyal customers by offering them free coffee and sweet treats in its stores throughout the upcoming weekend.
The investigation into the cybersecurity issue is ongoing.
