OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A grieving Oklahoma mother received a surprising boost of support from music artist Jelly Roll. Jason Deford, also known as "Jelly Roll," honored 19-year-old Rain Camacho during his concert on Thursday, November 14 in Oklahoma City. The 19-year-old died from a fentanyl overdose in May 2023, while attending Cameron University. Rain thought she was taking a Xanax, though it turned out the pill was laced with fentanyl. Because she was just trying to be safe and you can’t be because one mistake costs you your life and you won’t wake up,” said Karla Carlock, Rain's mother. (Courtesy Karla Carlock) Since her daughters death, Rain's mother has made it her mission to try and help other families who are struggling with grief. Carlock is apart of Families Supporting Families, a group of others who have lost their loved ones. After Jelly Roll paid tribute to her daughter, Carlock shared a video, thanking the music artist. "For a few minutes in time, you made my daughter alive again. Not physically, but you shared the face that's permanently etched within my heart," said Carlock in the video. "You used your platform to show my Rain for everything amazing and beautiful she was, and not just for what took her life." Jelly Roll, who struggled with addiction in the past and spent much of his younger life locked up on drug charges, now uses his music to tell his own story. He says his past is one reason he testified before congress, urging them to pass an anti-fentanyl legislation.
