Ag and Energy: Goehring says remaining corn will be a tough harvest
Nov 22, 2024
NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — The snow this week isn't making life any easier for farmers who still have corn left to harvest.
North Dakota Ag Commissioner Doug Goehring tells KX News as of the latest report, there are around 200,000 acres of corn that haven't been harvested around the state.
He says some farmers were waiting until the corn dried down further, while other fields were hit by sudden heavy rain or snow.
In some counties, elevators have been full, meaning storage is in short supply.

But Goehring says farmers who wait to harvest until spring risk losing more corn to hungry wildlife.
"When you're in a situation where you have little more bushels than you have storage, you can sacrifice it at the elevator and you can market it and they'll pile it on the ground. You'll take some pretty deep discounts," Goehring said. "You can risk piling on the ground or putting it in a bag, but that's going to cost you 35-40 cents a bushel to do that."
Goehring says as of the latest report, there are also between 80,000 and 90,000 acres of sunflowers left to harvest around the state, that's a little under 20% of the total crop that was planted this year.
