BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- 22 families started their forever journey on National Adoption Day, and Kern County gathered in celebration.
Not a dry eye was seen inside the courtroom, as judges shared their personal journeys with adoption to officiate a special one. Stevie and Steven now call a mother-daughter duo: "mom".
Maria Guadalupe Vazquez says she still can't believe this moment is happening and feels like she's still dreaming. After a years-long process, the wait is over for Vazquez and her daughter, Rosa Ruiz-Velasco.
"My mom pretty much has raised them since they were babies, so it just seemed like the natural step to take," said Rosa Ruiz-Velasco, daughter of Vazquez.

Even though the process can be difficult at times. Vazquez and Ruiz-Velasco didn't see Stevie and Steven for two months.
"They were like the longest two months of our lives," said Ruiz-Velasco.
Now nothing and no one can separate them.
"I feel at peace, because that's something they didn't have for so long," said Ruiz-Velasco. "Just like, not knowing how they were, if they were going to be okay, if they're being fed, or if their needs are being met. Now we know that that's never going to be an issue and there's peace in our hearts."
21 other families also finalized their adoption process this National Adoption Day, joining in on the big celebration for the new, bigger families in Kern County.
Vazquez says the kids need parents, and parents are a reflection of their children. Just as children grow into their parents' teachings.
There are thousands of children still waiting for their forever homes and you can change that.
