Actress Kelly Marie Tran has publicly come out as queer. The 35-year-old, who played Rose Tico in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, revealed she’s a member of the LGBTQ+ community while discussing her role as a lesbian in the upcoming queer remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 film “The Wedding Banquet.” “I haven’t said this publicly yet, but I’m a queer person,” she divulged to Vanity Fair. Of her role in “The Wedding Banquet,” set for release next year, Tran said she finally got to play a character that she felt like she really “knew.” “I don’t feel like I’m acting at all in this movie,” she said. In the minority-led remake, Tran stars as Angela, a woman trying to conceive through IVF with her girlfriend, played by history-making Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone. Living in their guest house are their best friends Chris and Min, a gay couple played by Bowen Yang and Han Gi-chan. When Min faces pressure from his old-fashioned family to return to his native Korea, he and Angela hatch a plan to have a fake wedding — both so he can secure a green card and she can get money from friends and family to cover her costly fertility treatments. “I’m here doing this amazing movie with these amazing people,” Tran shared. “I’ve never been in a queer space before. I’ve never truly felt this accepted before.” The remake is helmed by queer Korean-American filmmaker Andrew Ahn, the director behind the critically acclaimed “Spa Night,” which won the John Cassavetes Award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards in 2017.
