Ursuline vs. Gilmour football: Irish dominate in regional final, 540
Nov 22, 2024
RAVENNA — Gilmour was held to 24 yards in the first half against Ursuline in a Division III regional final Nov. 22. Even when the Lancers got into the backfield to try and put the Irish behind the sticks, Ursuline put its heads down and got positive yards.
The Lancers run ended with a 54-0 defeat. Ursuline will face Toledo Central Catholic in a D-III state semifinal Nov. 28.
Ursuline started the game fast on the ground, with five of their first six plays rushing. The drive was capped with a 31-yard quarterback run by DC Ferrell.
Gilmour had a three and out but a fake punt gave the Lancers a first down. But a sack and back-to-back incompletions forced another punt.
The Irish drove again and were at the Lancers’ 3 with a third and goal. But a bad snap resulted in a loss of 15 and a missed field goal.
The Lancers hoped to have some life had another sack lead to a punt on a three and out.
That’s when Joe Balog took over the rushing duties. He had five carries including a nine-yard score on that drive.
Balog also scored on the next two drives from eight and two yards out. He had 110 yards at halftime and Ferrell had 112.
“It’s a feeling that nobody wants to have,” Gilmour coach Tom Kaufman said. “Everyone’s been in a game or two like that, and we just missed tackles. It was uncharacteristic things. I take all the blame for that, and I always do when things like that happen for us.”
They finished with a combined 229 all-purpose yards.
Gilmour’s Cooper Panteck exited the game after a hit from AJ Snyder forced a fumble that Ursuline’s Karter Rudzik recovered.
Ferrell found Devonte Taylor caught a seven-yard score as well, and Vinnie Fecko scored from a yard out.
Ursuline added a pair of scores in the second half. Backup quarterback George Camuso had a 42-yard run up the sideline and Dale Peterman had a scoop and score in the fourth.
Kaufman is very proud of what his team was able to accomplish this season but also knows it’s just the start of the continued progression of the program.
“The senior class last year started it, and these guys elevated it,” Kaufman said. “We have to keep elevating it. There’s a lot of things that we need to do as an entire program better. We’re going to have a similar story this offseason as to last. All these guys heard was, ‘What can they do without the Kavcics?’ Now it’s what can they do without the last senior group.”
It’s an end to the most successful season of Gilmour football. The Lancers recorded the most wins in school history with 12 and advanced to their first regional final.
Senior Brody Lennon knows this was a special group of seniors for the Lancers, and now it’s up to the next wave of players to continue the growth of the program like they did.
“It was definitely special. One thing I learned from high school is don’t take anything for granted,” Lennon said. “There’s nobody else I would’ve rather played with. Coach Kaufman is the best coach I’ve played for, and it’s tough to never be playing with my childhood friends again.”
Junior Jack Soeder recorded an interception in the second quarter.
