The John Carroll men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Nov. 22 at the Great Lakes Invitational in Michigan, but the bigger story is the status of the Blue Streaks’ All-America point guard Luke Chicone. The Mentor graduate left JCU’s game against Johns Hopkins — an 84-69 defeat — after he suffered an injury. No specifics were provided by JCU about the injury. If Chicone misses extended time, it would be a huge setback for the Blue Streaks, who started the season ranked No. 3 in the country by D3Hoops.com The senior is the reigning Ohio Athletic Conference player of the year and was named first-team preseason All-America by D3Hoops.com. Chicone was averaging 18.0 points and 6.3 assists in his team’s first three games before Nov. 22. Against JHU (3-1), JCU fell behind, 40-25, at halftime and couldn’t rally in the second half. Chicone — who normally averaged 30-plus minutes per game for Coach Pete Moran — played just 13 minutes against the Blue Jays and scored four points on 1 of 4 shooting. Will Yontek led JCU (3-1) in scoring with 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Henry Raynaor had 12 points, and Chase Toppin and Luke Frazier each added 10. Toppin and Frazier struggled from the field, as they combined to make 6 of 25 shots. As a team, the Blue Streaks shoot 34.8% from the field (23 of 66) and just 2 of 23 from 3-point range. John Windley (23 points) and Jeb Williams (19) led JHU in scoring. JCU plays its second and final game at the GLI on Nov. 23 against Emory at 5:30 p.m.
