FORECAST: Windy with cold rain, mountain snow continues
Nov 22, 2024
We saw our first flakes of the season! What a day it has been. This morning, a quick burst of wet snowflakes fell across DC and many surrounding areas. Unfortunately, nothing stuck to the ground, and now most of the area has switched to cold rain. Cloudy, damp, chilly conditions will persist throughout the rest of the day east of the mountains as temperatures hover around 40 degrees and rain continues to fall into the night. It will also be windy, with gusts approaching 35-40 mph at times. Drier conditions will prevail for most of us as we enter the night.
The exception will be across the highest terrain of western MD and WV, where blizzard-like conditions are starting to unfold. Heavy, consistent snow will fall through tonight, accumulating to a foot or more in some locations. Strong wind gusts upwards of 50 mph will also cause blowing snow and whiteout conditions at times. Anyone in these locations should try to stay inside if possible until conditions improve on Saturday. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories remain in place for Garrett, Allegany, and Mineral Counties, where conditions will be the worst.
Thankfully, this massive storm system will be over by Saturday. As it exits, we will only have to deal with breezy winds of 15-30 mph, which will gradually let up with each passing hour. Sunshine will break out in the afternoon, warming us back into the 50s. By Sunday, high pressure will be overhead and give us some of our best weather in days. Mostly sunny skies will prevail, with temperatures pushing toward 60 degrees.
This warmer and quieter trend will continue through Monday, but another round of active weather will set up before Thanksgiving. A cold front will arrive on Tuesday, bringing isolated rain showers and dropping temperatures. Highs on Wednesday will only be in the upper 40s to lower 50s while we catch a brief dry break. We're watching the holiday weekend closely as trends continue to favor a potent storm system sweeping through sometime from Thanksgiving to Black Friday. Exact details and impacts from this system will become apparent over the next few days, but as of right now, another round of cold rain and wind is likely, with the possibility of some wet snow, mainly across the mountains.
Stay warm and dry out there, and have a fantastic rest of your Friday and weekend!
