BOWIE, Md. (DC News Now) — In Prince George’s County, new stop sign cameras will soon be installed near school zones as a safety measure. The Council passed the new bill this week. Trina Newman has five children and her youngest is a 14-year-old high school freshman student. She supports what the Council is doing to make sure drivers obey the rules of the road and stop at stop signs, especially in a school zone. “Our kids getting to school is important and I appreciate the cameras on the buses and now getting them in school zones having it at stop signs will be helpful,” Newman said. Businesses gearing up for winter season in Prince George’s County Council Chairperson Joleen Ivey said five municipalities were approved for the stop sign cameras which include Berwyn Heights, Brentwood, Colmar Manor, Morningside and Capital Heights. “It will be interesting to see how this will work and it can be such a public safety hazard when people drive through stop signs and we’ve seen in the past pedestrians getting killed so we are doing all we can to protect people,” Ivey said. Drivers who fail to stop at the school zone stop signs face having to pay a $40 citation.  The new cameras are expected to be installed in January.
