'Everybody has found themselves down': Foodlink makes farm to table food accessible
Nov 22, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — John Miller is Foodlink's farm specialist. He's 66 and has been working on farms since he was a kid. Miller has been running Foodlink's urban farm for three years — the food bank says it's the largest in Rochester.
"It gives me a great amount of joy to know — to see somebody buying a vegetable that they like, or eating a slice of pizza that they like," said Miller, "knowing that it's my tomatoes, it's my Oregano that's in there, that made it happen."
Miller says the farm produces four thousand pounds of food for Foodlink per year. Including produce like tomatoes, peppers, onions, eggplants, Oregano, Thyme, and more. A lot of the produce ends up at Foodlink's Community Cafe. He's always interacting with the cafe's chef, too, asking what they want him to grow.
At the community cafe you can pay full price for items — which helps support their mission to eliminate food insecurity. However, if you can't, they have $3 mission meals where you get an entrée, side, and water.
"Everybody has found themselves down from time to time and it's important to have a place that you can come that feels like home that you're treated with dignity, love, and respect," said Adam Frick, Foodlink's Community Cafe manager, "and you can fill your belly with warm food, made with love."
Frick says the Cafe gets a diverse group of customers from those who don't have homes to CEOs and executives of local companies.
To make delicious and healthy food year-round, Frick says the team works to preserve, process, and freeze as much as they can.
"We live in a culture where we can go to the store and buy a banana any time of year. So, people forget the seasonality of how we grow things here in Western NY," said Miller.
They are already in the process of planning for next year.
