Over 20,000 New Mexico households may be eligible for disaster food assistance

CHAVES COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), approximately 23,430 households in New Mexico may be eligible for food assistance. The USDA's Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) aims to help those affected by severe storms and flooding by providing financial assistance after times of emergency.
The program applies to people who may not have been eligible for SNAP assistance otherwise. To be eligible for the program, community members must live in zip codes 88201, 88202, 88203, 88230, 88232, or 88253; must meet disaster income limits; and must have qualifying disaster-related expenses.

Qualifying households can receive one month of benefits equal to the maximum monthly amount for a SNAP household of its size. The benefits can be used to purchase groceries at SNAP-authorized stores.
