KOKOMO, Ind. - Kokomo police are investigating what they are calling a theft ring on the city’s south side. Kokomo PD released Nest camera footage on Facebook that shows the moment three people dressed in hoodies open a car door and steal items from inside. “It doesn’t happen too often here in Kokomo,” said Lt. Charlie Fourkiller with Kokomo Police. “Not with multiple individuals using like a [theft] ring to work in teams to try to break into vehicles.” Lt. Fourkiller said over the past few months police have received numerous reports of items being stolen from cars that were parked on public streets and neighborhoods. The areas hardest hit were the Cedar Crest neighborhood and the Westbrook subdivision, both on the city’s south side. FOX59/CBS4 spoke to Trista Rose. The thieves broke into her car two weekends ago and stole her purse. Luckily she got it back a few days later and nothing was taken. She said while she’s happy about that, she’s even more grateful because her purse contains priceless memories. “I’m so happy I got my purse. My purse I have a lot of pins and stuff on there so I was really glad that that didn’t get stolen,” said Rose. “It was really scary to actually realize that we weren’t the only ones and it wasn’t some like random thing. It’s going on.” Lt. Fourkiller said all the incidents happened between midnight and 5 a.m. Police believe at least three people are involved in the theft ring, stealing everything from money to guns. “There’s people out there that are reckless with these guns and we’re not sure what they are going to utilize them for. But now that they are in their hands we have no control over it so we are going to do the best we can to intervene and get these guns back,” said Lt. Fourkiller. Lt. Fourkiller said police understand this type of crime in Kokomo is unusual and unnerving for residents. He said to take precautions like locking car doors and bringing valuables inside. And while police continue to investigate, Lt. Fourkiller said he’s confident the thieves “We will catch you. It’s just a matter of time,” said Lt. Fourkiller. Kokomo Police say they are beefing up patrols in the area. If you know anything or recognize anyone in the video call Kokomo Police.
