'We were shocked by what we'd seen on our hike': Hawaiʻi hikes
Nov 22, 2024
HONOLULU (KHON2) -- For today's episode of KHON2.com's Unfit Adventurer, we decided to take a bit of an unorthodox approach to our hike.
While there are copious amounts of hiking trails and botanical gardens to hike and walk, something we don't normally do to enhance our lifestyle is walking to a local store to pick up purchases rather than driving.

On a weekend afternoon, we found ourselves lounging but craving some ice cream. We'd already heard lots of traffic and sirens which did not make us want to get into a vehicle and drive anywhere.
Then it dawned on us. We can just walk!
So, we grabbed a backpack, put on some comfy shoes and trekked to our nearest grocery store.
While there wasn't any dirt or mud, we did have trees, plants and flowers. There weren't too many people walking.
There weren't any magnificent views of the island and there weren't any fellow hikers to whom we could interview and talk.
But the things we saw more than made up for those interactions.
When we first started out, we ran into one of our neighbors who was walking her dog. We'd never seen her outside the condo building. So, it was somewhat amusing to see her drag her dog behind her.
Every time he wanted to sniff a flower or a patch of grass or a cement block, she'd pull him down the sidewalk. Undeterred, he kept trying. She waved; then disappeared into the building with the wee pup in tow.
As we made our way down the street, we began to understand why there was so much car horn honking.
At the intersection, cars kept running red lights and blocking oncoming traffic. When we say blocking oncoming traffic, we mean people ran the red light and sat in the middle of the intersection so no one else could move. They just sat there with no shame as all these people were staring at them.
Once we got past this exercise in entitlement, we witnessed an accident. A person drove their vehicle into oncoming traffic without looking to see if another person was coming. Of course, the person who got hit was irate and jumped out to begin screaming at the woman he'd just cut off.
We got to a light that was red, meaning we couldn't walk. Thankfully, we stopped because just as the light turned red, four vehicles drove through the red light. Cars from the other direction were already going. But they just pulled out in front of the oncoming traffic and kept going.
When we got closer to the grocery store, we passed a few restaurants with folks enjoying themselves, probably grateful they weren't in that traffic.
By the time we made it to the area of destination, we were shocked by what we'd seen on our hike.
When we got to the store, the sliding glass doors opened. One man who had reached the door about the same time we did, paused so we could pass. We were impressed with his mindfulness and generosity.
But just as we were about to step in, a woman came barreling through knocking us out of the way and not saying a word to any of us.
Was she in a hurry? It didn't seem like it when we saw her perusing the cereal aisle like it was an art exhibit.
We found our ice cream and decided to get a few toppings to treat ourselves.
Going up to the registers to check out was uneventful, but our cashier was super friendly. Thank you, Chelsea!
On our walk back we realized that we felt better than we did before we started out our walk.
Before we took the walk, we felt tired and unmotivated. Nothing seemed like it was good enough to watch, and none of our games interested us.
But on that walk back, we noticed we were feeling better, more inspired, more interested.
We checked Google Maps to find out how far we'd walked. Turns out the round trip was nearly two miles. We'd trekked two miles, and it was infinitely easier than most of the trails we've hiked.
So, an activity that didn't cost anything, didn't require us to get into traffic and gave us a treat at the end. It was a good walk.

So, if you decide to trek to your local store, then be aware that the experience for everyone who does it is different. You’ll need to rely on your own physical skills to determine whether this is the right hike for you.
And as always, never hike alone.
