Teens Teaching Trades: Trading the pencil for a hammer
Nov 22, 2024
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE)— High school students from Carroll High School spent their Friday afternoon teaching third graders from Perry Hill Elementary.
The 20 Carroll students are enrolled in the building and facilities maintenance program that partners with Local 166. They spend their afternoons with a Local 166 instructor to learn about the trades.
"There's students that maybe don't necessarily like sitting in a classroom for 45 minutes listening to a teacher talk," Carroll High School Associate Principal, Jeremy Yates said. "So, they're able to go in the afternoon, and spend time with an instructor that has them up moving around, and providing some hands-on experiences with them."
Yates said the partnership has opened high school students' eyes to the range of possibilities after graduation other than college.
The teens took that program a step further and helped third graders build tool boxes on Friday afternoon. This was the second occurrence of "Teens teaching trades." Yates said the goal is to expose younger students to things outside of the normal classroom environment that they're used to.
"Our hope is to spread out and reach all the elementary schools in Northwest Allen County," Yates said.
