UPDATE: FRIDAY 11/22/2024 11:41 a.m.
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — The alleged UCCS shooter has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Samuel Knopp and Celie Montgomery.
Nicholas Jordan, the alleged shooter, appeared at El Paso County court for an arraignment hearing on Friday, Nov. 22. The defense tried to motion for another arraignment date, citing they needed more time to find mental health experts and information. Prosecutors said the defense has had time, and the victims in the case were "eager" to see a trial date set.
The judge denied the defense's request for another arraignment, as he did not believe additional time was appropriate in the case, due to the defense entering a plea of not guilty.
Jordan will appear in court on Jan. 31, the defense will be able to change his not-guilty plea to not guilty by reason of insanity by that date. A two-week trial will begin on April 7 for the murder charges, Jordan will also be back in court for the allegations of a jail assault on April 21.
ORIGINAL STORY: Alleged UCCS shooter back in court for arraignment hearing

Nicholas Jordan, the alleged gunman in the Feb. 16 killing of Samuel Knopp and Celie Montgomery will appear in El Paso County court on Friday, Nov. 22 at 9:30 a.m. for an arraignment hearing after it was postponed in late October.
The alleged shooter was set to appear in court for an arraignment hearing on Oct. 25, but it was moved after the defense argued it needed more time to properly investigate the case.
The defense said the complexity of the case and Jordan's competency being "fluid" has impacted the defense's ability to properly investigate the case and that entering a plea would violate due process and effective representation for Jordan.
Prosecutors argued that families of the victims have been waiting since February for justice, that Jordan was found competent in May, and that the defense appears to have a large team and plenty of resources.
During the Oct. 25 hearing, the judge found good cause to issue a continuance to Nov. 22 and said it would be the final continuance granted.
According to arrest documents, Jordan was Knopp's roommate at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) when he was accused of fatally shooting Knopp and Montgomery in a dorm at the university.
