GCSD works on safety measures after recent uptick in school threats

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD)--Over the last few weeks, charges have been filed against several Georgetown County students for making school threats. Now, the district administration is working hard to combat this.
Since the beginning of the 2024 school year, officials have investigated a total of 47 threats made by students. The most recent threat was made by a Waccamaw Middle School student who threatened a teacher’s life after an administrator took away her bag of chips.
Georgetown County School District Superintendent Dr. Bethany Giles told News 2 that many threats are unsubstantiated and made as jokes. Still, she wants students to understand they are no laughing matter.
“We all want to laugh. We all want to have fun, but there are appropriate ways to do it. And joking about safety or joking in a bullying or threatening manner is inappropriate. That’s not the way to be funny or to humor. We want it to be in good spirit,” said Giles.
Dr. Giles is also asking parents to do their part by staying vigilant about monitoring their kids’ online activity.
“We also need our parents to safeguard against social media conversations and things students can access. We want them to ensure that they are speaking and using the appropriate words and choosing their response to situations appropriately,” said Giles.
If you know of any threats circulating on social media, you should immediately report them to local law enforcement and the school district.
