BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – Berkeley Animal Center is temporarily closed to the public after multiple cases of Parvo were discovered at the shelter.
The shelter said all animal intakes, adoptions, and visits are on hold until further notice. The facility will stay closed through Nov. 29 with a plan to reopen on Saturday, Nov. 30.
Canine parvovirus infection is a very contagious disease that attacks white blood cells and the gastrointestinal tract of dogs, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. It can also damage the heart muscle in puppies.
Berkeley Animal Center said the temporary closure will allow it to prioritize the health and safety of its animals and prevent the virus from spreading.
“In addition, the shelter has implemented a strict cleaning, disinfecting, and care protocol to ensure no other dogs contract the illness,” the shelter said.
