Credit: University of Baltimore. The University of Baltimore’s 10-year Facilities Master Plan received final approval on Friday from the University System of Maryland Board of Regents. One of the plan’s chief recommendations is for the largest building on campus, the Academic Center in the 1400 block of N. Charles Street, to be demolished and replaced with a smaller “Center for Learning” that’s more energy- and cost-efficient and better aligned with the university’s space needs and mission.Another recommendation is to convert the former headquarters of The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore to a “UBalt Welcome Center” housing the President’s office and other administrative departments now located in the Academic Center. The university already leases that building at 101 W. Mount Royal Avenue from The Associated, which moved its headquarters to Park Heights Avenue earlier this year. The Board of Regents’ Committee on Finance approved UBalt’s facilities plan in October. Friday’s action means the University System of Maryland has officially adopted the master plan to guide capital improvements on the midtown campus over the next 10 years. The board’s action does not imply approval of specific projects within the master plan. According to state officials, individual projects such as the Center for Learning still must go to the Board of Regents separately for funding approval and will be subject to the state’s standard capital and operating budget review processes. The target date for completion of the Center for Learning is sometime in the early 2030s.
