Wichita residents step up to help others this Thanksgiving
Nov 22, 2024
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita groups are stepping up to make sure everyone has what they need ahead of Thanksgiving.
On Friday morning, Wichita Public School students helped support the United Methodist Open Door Turkey Drive at Wichita's Water Walk. The event showcased bands, mascots, and floats to collect turkeys, side items, and money. Monetary donations can also be dropped off at the Open Door Community Food Ministry building, 2130 E. 21st. N., or made on the organization's website.
"So last year, we served 3,700, just over 3,700 families households the three days before Thanksgiving. That was a record and so the need is high, and we're hoping to be able to meet at least most of that," Deanne Smith, United Methodist Open Door executive director, said.
If people need assistance, holiday turkey boxes will be available for pick up Monday through Wednesday, Nov. 25-Nov. 27, between 9 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. You must have a valid ID for all household members, proof of address, and verification that the household income is 130% of the poverty level. Pickup is at 2130 E. 21st. N. For more, click here.
Why is Thanksgiving so late this year?
