ROUTE 66 MARATHON: What's in store for this weekend?

The Williams Route 66 Marathon kicks off in Tulsa theweekend of Nov. 23 for its 19th year.Events are planned for runners, but also for Tulsans to enjoy. The Run basics:The marathon benefits a cause called Kicks For Kids. The non-profit pairs Williams Route 66 Marathon race directors with local kids to complete their first 5K during the Williams Route 66 Marathon race weekend. Participants get training, a free t-shirt, a finisher medal for the 5K, and mentorship from a Williams Route 66 Marathon race director. Health ExpoPacket pick-up starts Friday at the Health Expo at the Cox Business Center. The Dicks House of Sport Health and Fitness Expo is also hosting exhibitors featuring running gear and shoes as well as sports and fitness and sustainability-related items.The expo is free and open to the public. It runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23.When do the runs start?There are 2 days of running for the weekend. Shorter runs are on Saturday, and then the longer runs kick off on Sunday.Race Schedule SATURDAY, NOV. 23 5k Run & Walk - 8 am Mascot Dash - 9 am 1-Mile Fun Run - 9 am SUNDAY, NOV. 24 Marathon - 8 am Half-Marathon - 8 am Marathon Relay - 8 am Which roads are closed? There are always some traffic issues for the race weekend; take a look at the routes to help you know areas to avoid.Saturday's races: Sunday's routes: Fun rivalries: TFD vs. TPDThis competition between the two departments began in 2023. Both departments put together relay teams for the event.Last year, the TFD came out on top, a win that lit a fire in the bellies of TPD officers, who say 2024 will be their year."We got a really good competitive team, and were gonna bring it, Officer Josh Metcalf told 2 News.An assistant fire marshal, Roy Zoellner poured cold water on TPDs claim theyll win, "We will greet them at the finish line. Well be waiting for them at the finish line, and we look forward to congratulating them on a good run."The competition is all in good fun.
