FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - The girlfriend of a man found dead in his car last year is the third of four people to be sentenced in connection with his killing. A judge in Allen Superior Court handed 26-year-old Lexus Evans 13 years in prison. She pleaded guilty to aggravated battery in the death of 40-year-old Dennis Dwayne Starr, who was shot and killed in southwest Fort Wayne in July 2023. A total of four people were initially accused of murder in connection to Starr's death. Three, including Evans, pleaded guilty to lesser charges in exchange for having the murder charges dropped, but a fourth man pleaded guilty to murder. According to court documents, Evans was Starr’s girlfriend and the shooting stemmed from an alleged assault at a cookout. Evans told police in court documents she was jumped by Starr’s friends, and it wasn’t until he returned and told them it was enough that they allegedly stopped assaulting her. Detectives used surveillance footage and cell phone pings to track the accused as they allegedly followed Starr on his way to work a few days later. The autopsy determined Starr died from a gunshot wound in his chest and his death was ruled a homicide. Samuel W. Evans III and Jesse Shears were both sentenced Monday. Evans III was handed less than four years in prison, while Shears got under 10 years. Both men had pleaded guilty to battery charges. Samuel Evans IV, the fourth person connected to the case, pleaded guilty to murder and is set to be sentenced Dec. 2. Lexus Evans' sentence runs consecutively to a separate 5-year sentence she received earlier this year for battery with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness in another case.
