Mooch Senior Games will cap local soccer season Sunday in Hamilton
Nov 20, 2024
The final games of the 2022 high school soccer season will take place Sunday when the Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame/Glenn “Mooch” Myernick Senior Games cap the fall campaign as some of the county’s top senior girls’ and boys’ players head to Al Cowell Sr. Field in Hamilton’s Veterans Park to display their talents for local fans once more before graduation.
The Princeton and Robbinsville High boys’ team came up a little short in their state semifinal games Tuesday, making all invited players eligible to participate.
After paying tribute to Hall of Famer Bob Rostron, who passed away in January, the high school senior girls’ game will kick off the day’s action at noon. The high school senior boys will cap Sunday’s festivities with a game scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. High school players should plan to arrive ½-hour ahead of game time for check in.
The overall event honors the memory of Mooch Myernick, who grew up playing soccer in Lawrence before going on to earn national and international acclaim ahead of his sudden death in 2006. Myernick, who was an All-America in high school and college; a Hermann Trophy winner; an Olympic team member; the No. 1 draft pick of the North American Pro Soccer League and a two-time World Cup assistant coach, was inducted into the United States Soccer Hall of Fame in 2015.
With the help of sponsors like the Mercer Soccer Hall of Fame; the Mooch Soccer Program; NJM Insurance; Bob Smith Soccer Academy; RSword; Ciro Baldino of Conte’s Pizza; Richard Fornaro of Fornaro & Francioso, Counselors at Law; Dino Spadaccini of the Spadaccini Law Firm; the Ancient Order of the Hibernians Club; Tony Rosica & Greg Harvell of Keller Williams Premier Real Estate; Marsilio’s/Rossi’s Bar and Grill; plus Premier Key Abstract, the Mooch Senior Games are free to the public.
The teams, coached by Mercer Hall of Fame members, are divided into Red and White squads to commemorate Myernick’s Lawrence High school colors.
Like the coaches, the referees for these matches donate their time in hopes that all might enjoy one more fun day of soccer before sports head indoors for the winter.
