HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — The State Fair of Virginia opening weekend was filled with sunshine and smiles, after ripple effects of Hurricane Helene caused a rainy start earlier this week. “With the weather that we’ve had the past couple of days, [we're] praying for everybody down south," said equestrian Edward Williams. "But for us to be able to kind of come out with families and spend time with the kids... that's what I'm truly excited to see." The fair is happening at Meadow Event Park, and features horse races like the one Williams is preparing for, dozens of rides, food and more. The expectation was around 200,000 visitors from across the Commonwealth, and the community showed out. “It’s like a family tradition for us," said Laquisha Davis. "And we’re gonna see the racing pigs, I like to see the racing pigs and the horses and stuff like that," said her husband Michael Davis. The couple said they've been taking their daughter, Leia, to the state fair since she was young to give her the 'fair experience'." "I want to do some crazy rides and I want to do the mirror games," said Leia Davis. "I come on field trips here too."   The family enjoyed the warm weather, surrounded by so many community members doing the same. "It's a family event," Laquisha said. "Family friendly, and it gives people something to do.” The State Fair of Virginia is celebrating 170 years of operation. It will run through now until Oct. 6.
