BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier set a new personal passing record, but it was the LSU running game that started hot for the Tigers, in a 42-10 victory over South Alabama on Saturday night.
LSU football head coach Brian Kelly had emphasized starting fast in recent weeks, especially after falling behind by 17 points against South Carolina and then starting sluggish at home last week against UCLA.
Freshman running back Caden Durham was the early spark for the Tigers, taking the first play from scrimmage 71 yards on a screen pass for a touchdown.
LSU led 7-0, and then it was the second play from scrimmage for the Tigers that Durham took it 86 yards, just missing the end zone for a score by half a yard. LSU would score on the very next play.

Nussmeier set a new individual high of 409 passing yards; his previous best was 395 in last year's bowl game against Wisconsin. He also threw two touchdowns and two interceptions on the night.
The Tigers outgained the Jaguars 429-124 in the first half alone.
LSU football now has the week off before returning to SEC play at home against Ole Miss on Saturday, Oct. 12.
