MCC unveils new initiative to combat student food insecurity: automated food lockers

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The SUNY Chancellor paid a visit to Monroe Community College Thursday, announcing initiatives to help tackle food insecurity that college students face.
One of those initiatives: automated food lockers.
SUNY Chancellor John King Jr. said all SUNY campuses have food pantries where students can get basic nutritional needs. With these new automated lockers though, students will be able to get healthy food even when those pantries close. Officials said it will allow anyone to access what they need, when they need it.
"Some of those challenges, maybe more than some people would expect, are around meeting student's most basic needs, including food insecurity," said the Chancellor. "Students cannot be expected to learn if they are hungry, and studies show that far too many are."
MCC will be one of the first campuses to receive one of these lockers. It'll be joined by SUNY Plattsburgh, Finger Lakes Community College, SUNY Polytechnic Institute and SUNY Potsdam.
