ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The pilot phase of what's known as the "Good Phone Project" launched Thursday at the Father Tracy Advocacy Center. It's a phone booth that allows free calling with voicemail capabilities. The last active payphone in Monroe County was disconnected in January. Even though a majority of Americans own a cellphone, places such as libraries, neighborhood centers and food pantries still have a high number of people requesting to use their phones. "Good Phones" is repurposing payphones into free phones for anyone in the community to use. "One of our goals is that each user can set-up their own voicemail box so wherever they're installed throughout Monroe County, they can actually access their voicemail," said Eric Kunsman, an assistant professor at RIT/NTID. "So, if they're applying for a job or, you know, just looking for any help, they can get that or if a family member just wants to leave a message for them that they can actually retrieve later on." Free high-speed Wi-Fi will also be added in the future. New design modifications to allow video call services will also be explored, officials said.
