Primetime 585 Spotlight Team: Penfield Boys Volleyball
Sep 26, 2024
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Primetime 585 Spotlight Team is Penfield boys volleyball.
The Patriots last week defeated Irondequoit, Webster and Rush-Henrietta while losing only one set combined and improved to 7-0. They are the last remaining unbeaten boys volleyball team left in Section Five.
In the last nine days, Penfield has defeated both finalists from the Class A sectional tournament last year. Webster is one of those teams. The other is this year's defending Division 1 state champion: Fairport.
"It's pretty nice because when you beat a team like that, it's great," junior libero Christian Zarzycki said. "Also, it's another step in the road because we know we're going to play them again later. It's great now, but I hope we beat them later, too. That's the goal."
After all those high profile wins and being the last perfect team standing will put a bullseye on Penfield's back the rest of this year. The Patriots won't be shaken.
"We're looking good. We're looking strong. We got a lot of weapons. We got a lot of big defense that's looked great," junior outside hitter Gabe Rivera said.
Penfield is deep and getting solid play from Zarzycki, Rivera, Zach Scully, Austin Drews, Ian Equinozzi, Nate Austin and Malcolm Phillips. Also can't forget two of the best hitters in Section Five in junior Elijah Johnson and sophomore Owen Gutman.
As the hunted team and knowing other teams will have their best ready every time they face the Patriots, Johnson was asked by Primetime 585's Karen Iglesia if that will affect how they play. Johnson's answer provided a good snapshot of how confident Penfield is right now.
"No."
Sectionals is going to be real interesting. Congratulations to Penfield boys volleyball for being the Primetime 585 Spotlight Team.
