SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A man was extradited from El Salvador this week and arraigned in connection with a 1991 cold case, according to the office of San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan. Alfredo Hernandez, 66, appeared in San Diego Superior Court Thursday for his arraignment regarding the 1991 death of 39-year-old Terri Bistodeau, the attorney's office said. Man found dead behind Food 4 Less in Mission Valley East On Aug. 4, 1991, San Diego police officers responded to a home in the 5300 block of Geneva Avenue in San Diego's Emerald Hills neighborhood. Authorities said Bistodeau was found strangled to death on the floor of her bedroom, but the case was left unsolved over the years despite the efforts of law enforcement. Investigators revisited the case in the late 2000s. In 2019, DNA testing and further investigation led law enforcement to suspect Hernandez's involvement. The attorney's office said Hernandez was charged in 2021 and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was found in El Salvador and, upon the approval of an extradition request from the country's government, he was returned to the United States. If found guilty of the murder charge, Hernandez faces up to 25 years-to-life in state prison, according to the attorney's office.
