Park City is a popular mountain destination. And Parkites, generally, see themselves as having picked a great place to reside.A well-known magazine agrees.Travel + Leisure on Tuesday put Park City near the top of a list of what it considers to be the Best Mountain Destinations to Live in the U.S.Park City placed fourth on the list. The Travel + Leisure list is different than some other rankings, which often are designed to highlight the skiing exclusively. The list published this week, though, considers the communities as places where someone may want to live. The capsule about Park City, accompanied by a photograph of Old Town, quotes a local real estate broker talking about the community offering attractions someone may find in a larger city as well as the access to the mountains, the arts, parks and events. The piece also notes Park City’s real estate prices, which have long been driven higher by the community’s status as a top-tier mountain resort. Travel + Leisure says, “If you plan on making Park City your permanent home, be ready to pay up.” The piece puts the median value of a residence at a little less than $1.6 million, a dollar figure the magazine describes as “eye-watering.”Park City, as a community, and the mountain resorts have for decades received accolades in various national publications. In some cases, Park City is praised for the historic nature of Old Town, while in other instances the proximity to an international airport is cited. The presence of two major mountain resorts so close to each other is also often of note. The Travel + Leisure piece indicated the magazine compiled the list “after chatting with real estate experts across the nation.”The piece did not delve into details about the community other than the value of real estate. Parkites themselves often express frustration with population growth, development and traffic. There are also widespread concerns about affordability, something the piece touched on when describing the median value of a residence. The piece also did not mention the role Park City is poised to play during the 2034 Winter Olympics. Park City Mountain, Deer Valley Resort and the Utah Olympic Park are identified as important competition venues for the Games. One of the other communities on the list, No. 1-ranked Boulder, Colorado, is notable in Park City at this moment. Boulder, the location of the University of Colorado and often a top performer on lists centered on livability, is one of the places under consideration to become the host of the Sundance Film Festival. Sundance organizers have narrowed the list of finalists to three — Boulder; Cincinnati, Ohio; and a combined bid involving Park City and Salt Lake City.Deer Valley Resort offers a network of trails for mountain biking in the summer and fall.
