HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Crews have started demolishing a house that has been falling into the ocean near Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore. Get Hawaii's latest morning news delivered to your inbox, sign up for News 2 You The Department of Permitting and Planning (DPP) issued an emergency demolition permit just two days after the home began its dangerous descent. The house, located on Ke Nui Road, had accumulated numerous violations for illegal erosion measures over the years and has now been torn down to prevent further collapse. “This situation didn’t happen overnight,” said environmental activist Denise Antolini. “The owner was aware it was teetering on the edge. He should have taken preventive actions, like removing the house before it fell in.” In a statement, the DPP emphasized its commitment to public safety, stating, “Understanding the immediate health and safety situation of the failing structure on Ke Nui Road, the DPP has been working with the landowner and his contractor to quickly demolish the structure to prevent it from further falling onto the beach and into the ocean.” State provides $235,000 to support homeless youth services Antolini added, “We need to ensure the hazard is inspected and demolished, and the homeowner should be held accountable for the cleanup costs.” The demolition comes a day after the state attorney general filed a temporary restraining order and an injunction against the landowner, citing total disregard for conservation district land use and environmental laws. State Representative Sean Quinlan expressed frustration with the homeowner's cooperation, saying, “He is far and away the most uncooperative homeowner on the entire North Shore. Once he realized the gravity of the situation and the potential financial responsibility for cleanup, he began to cooperate a bit more.” Quinlan also noted that the health department is working to inspect the property, as the homeowner has not clarified the location of the cesspool system. “The attorney general is seeking an injunction to ensure the site is cleaned up and to recover any costs incurred by the state or county,” Antolini said. “This is a historic move for the AG to take proactive action in this case.” Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news Contractors told KHON2 that they plan to remove the remaining concrete tomorrow, with the landowner covering the costs of the demolition.
