HONOLULU (KHON2) -- A contentious bill aimed at relaxing fireworks regulations on Oahu has moved forward, advancing to the full city council. If approved, the measure would permit the sale of novelty fireworks, excluding firecrackers, without the need for a permit. However, aerial displays would still require professional handling. Remaining Mountain West members recommit to conference Honolulu City Council member Andria Tupola criticized the current fireworks ban, stating, “The fireworks ban is not working. Waipahu lights up, and it’s a favorite place for everyone to watch. At this point, we would be delusional to think that continuing along this path will yield positive results.” Tina Yamaki of the Retail Merchants of Hawaii supported the bill, arguing that allowing consumer fireworks sales would benefit both retailers and the community. All other counties in Hawaii currently permit the sale of these types of fireworks.
