MANDAN, ND (KXNET) — Local golfers came out to take in the lovely early fall weather on Thursday, September 26, to tee-off at the Mandan Parks and Recreation Foundation's 2nd Annual "Scramble for Scholarships" Golf Tournament to help kids in need in the community. Around 130 golfers loaded their clubs and headed off to hit the links at Prairie West Golf Course to raise funds for Mandan Parks and Recreation's youth programs. Money raised at the tournament will be used to fund discounted recreational activities for kids from families that would otherwise not be able afford to them. Among the many activities Mandan Parks and Recreation offer for youth are basketball, volleyball and swim lessons throughout the year. Kelly Thomas, Community Engagement Manager of Mandan Parks & Recreation, says that each year, they use the money raised in the tournament to provide youth program scholarships to around 50 to 100 local kids from families who qualify. Central Middle School in Minot gets brand new food pantry "It's great to have programs like this because it'll give a kid a chance that might not have had that opportunity to get involved in a team sport or program, and make a connection or make a friend. So, we're just trying to provide that to the community," said Thomas. Justin Thomas, from Bismarck, who enjoys playing in many different tournaments, said that this one is always high on his list because he feels it is an important cause to help kids in need. "It's great to give every child the opportunity to participate in sports. I think it's really great for building character, and learning things like teamwork, physical education, as well as just giving them a chance," expressed Thomas. Kelly Thomas says since this is their second year of hosting the scramble, awareness has grown about the reactional programs they offer for kids. The foundation hopes the scramble this year raises $10,000, and that they can get more golfers involved in future tournaments. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
