Santee doles out $600k to ransomware consultant after 'cyber security' incident

SANTEE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Santee paid a ransomware consulting firm over $600,000 to help the city address a "cyber security" incident that impacted its computer servers in late August.
The incident was first detailed in the closed session agenda for the city council on Aug. 28. The agenda item described the incident as a "threat to public services or facilities."
Then, on Tuesday, the city council affirmed a $603,000 payment to Coveware, Inc., a firm that bills itself as "ransomware recovery first responders." In documents attached to the meeting's agenda, the expenditure was described as for consulting services and was dated on Sept. 10.
Specific details about exactly what occurred that caused the city to bring in Coveware, Inc. have not yet been made available.

Bree Osborne, spokesperson for Santee, said in a statement to FOX 5/KUSI that the incident occurred on Aug. 20 and lead to an outage on the computer network "that services administration offices for the city."
Osborne noted that there was no impact on any systems supporting emergency services, nor the the outage cause public safety issues.
"The City remained open for business throughout the entire incident, and we have largely resolved the issue," Osborne added.
However, she said the city is still investigating to determine whether any information may have been compromised and what triggered the security lapse.
"We want to thank our employees and our community for their patience and understanding while we addressed the issue," Osborne continued.
