WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The American Red Cross is mobilizing volunteers from Kansas to respond as another hurricane bears down on the Florida panhandle. The Red Cross has assigned around 360 disaster workers, including five from Kansas. They will help with sheltering, feeding and logistics. Trailers of supplies have already been deployed, and the Red Cross said it is ready to open shelters to help people in need. It's also preparing around 45,000 snacks, ready-to-eat meals, and emergency response vehicles. In addition, the Red Cross said it has sent hundreds of blood products to Florida to ensure blood remains available for patients in areas likely to be impacted by the storm. "Over the coming days, the Red Cross anticipates blood drive cancellations and lower donor turnout throughout the Southeast as communities confront dangerous weather conditions," a news release said. KSN also spoke with a Red Cross volunteer about the job he is preparing to do. Mark Roberts is stationed in Tallahassee waiting for the hurricane's landfall and says they have brought all the supplies needed to shelter and coordinate evacuations. "Our main job with the Red Cross is sheltering and feeding," said Roberts. Local first responders heading to Florida for Helene relief Some people are already staying in shelters but he expects that number to go up. "We're spending the day in our rooms preparing, getting ready. And then for, you know, probably Friday or Saturday when we start bringing more people in. So there's lots to do," said Roberts. "We'll proceed again and start all over again, bringing more people in and then more trucks are coming in and more supplies." Kansas first responders are also in Florida to provide swift water rescues. Crews from Wichita, Derby, and Sedgwick County are among those helping get people to safety. "Some of the equipment and assets they took with them are hard-bottomed boats and inflatable boats, and they trained specifically with those throughout the year for scenarios just like this," said Lance Feyh, Public Information Manager at the Office of the State Fire Marshal. "We all have a little fear of something coming at us, but I think we're all safe. The Red Cross making sure we're safe, and then we just want to know what we have to do so we get it done," said Roberts. Roberts says he is serving the public with just one goal in mind. "We always hope that they are only there a short while and they get to go home," said Roberts. Red Cross also shared with KSN that they are recruiting more volunteers to go to Florida for a two-week commitment on the ground. The Kansas and Oklahoma region has a goal to recruit 20 new volunteers in the next few days, especially for reunification of people separated by the storm.
