TOPEKA (KSNT) - Firefighters with Topeka's Fire Engine #7 responded to more calls than any other unit in Kansas last year, according to Firehouse Magazine's Run Survey. Topeka's Engine 7 made 3,792 runs alone in 2023, according to Firehouse Magazine. The Topeka Fire Department (TFD) overall responded to a record number of calls last year. City of Topeka spokeswoman Rosie Nichols said the demand for fire and medical services continues to grow. "Despite this increasing workload, the department has worked to meet these demands with the same level of resources," Nichols said. "Typically here at #7, we are the busiest in the city, busiest number-wise in the state," TFD Captain Jacob Torrez said. "We typically show up and a lot of times we're running calls before we even get dressed and ready for the day." Torrez said Fire Engine #7 responds to a wide range of calls within the department's fairly large territory. He said Fire Engine #7 works from Fairlawn down to MacVicar and catches a lot of the central Topeka fires. There are four people who work Engine #7 and it works with a minimum of three firefighters. In 2014, the City of Topeka published a report titled 'Fire Resource Allocation & Wage Comparability' wherein the city compared its fire department spending to 17 similar cities. The City of Topeka's report found the fire department spent about $36 more per resident for fire protection than the other 17 benchmark cities. In 2024, Topeka had a per-resident spending of $284, or $34 more per citizen. What is legal window tint in Kansas? "There's been days we don't even get to sit down until seven or eight in the evening," Torrez said. "So I mean it's constant calls, out running doing this, fixing that, going to, this going to that, you know, it's just a constant in the truck or on the truck doing stuff. There are some days you don't even get to sit down." For more local news, click here.
