Rhode Island Energy says manhole explosion due to ‘electrical failure’
Sep 26, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Energy said that the manhole explosion on Clemence Street and Washington Street on Sept. 25 was due to an “electrical failure.”
The company said that work in the area is still underway but there were no outages as a result of the fire.
At 2 p.m. firefighters on the scene determined a “small underground electrical fire” caused a manhole to dislodge.
A parking attendant in the area said the explosion felt like a lightning strike.
Surveillance footage of the blast showed a man appearing to take a picture of a mural just before the manhole cover was launched into the air behind him.
