PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence School Board Member Ty’Relle Stephens said he is asking the Providence Public Schools Department for “clearer guidance” on the nature of the network breach that occurred in early September. The department said that the network disturbance was due to unauthorized entry into the network, and an “unverified third party” claimed it has access to school files. Stephens said that the specific details of what data has been compromised is unknown, but he plans to discuss with the district and his fellow board members how to “explore what steps we can take as a body.” “This includes the possibility of calling an emergency meeting to address concerns from the community and provide the School Department with an opportunity to share what they know and are able to disclose,” he said. “Additionally, I will be advocating for the city to allocate more financial resources to the Providence School Department, specifically to secure insurance coverage that would protect us against future incidents like this.” He added that he “believes the department is taking necessary precautions” and asks that community members remain patient while more information is found.
