CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A student from Scituate and one from Cranston were both arrested within the last seven days due to unrelated threatening statements they posted online. Scituate police said they arrested a middle school student last week after an online argument between two boys led to one making a serious threat on Thursday night. One student has been charged with cyberstalking as a minor. Lana Messina, whose 6-year-old daughter goes to school in Scituate, said she was concerned about her daughter's safety as soon as she got the notification on Friday. "I was even worried about sending [my daughter to school] on the following Monday, because it's the day without the threats that are even more scary," she said. "It should have been sent out right when it was happening. I think if it's a 0.00001% chance, that's too much." Just this past Wednesday, Cranston police shared they had also arrested a student who made an unrelated threat against Cranston High School East on the social media app Snapchat. Major Todd Patalano said the threat was deemed non-credible, but the student was charged with disorderly conduct. "In this case, it took us just about four hours," Patalano said. "We were notified by the FBI, immediately assigned people to the investigation, started to track down IP addresses and see where this originated from. We were able to identify it from a Cranston residence." Patalano said police take these threats seriously each time, but they do require additional help, especially because these threats are often made after school. "They'll work through the night to make sure that the next morning before school starts, we know who did it, why they did it, and where they did it from," he said. Messina said it's tough to have difficult conversations about school safety with her young daughter — a sentiment shared by many parents across the country. "She's six years old," Messina told 12 News. "How do I explain that to her?" Kate Wilkinson ([email protected]) is a Target 12 investigative reporter for 12 News.
