INDIANAPOLIS -- IMPD is investigating a homicide in the Massachusetts Avenue area after a 65-year-old man was found dead inside his apartment building. Police were first called around 2 p.m. on Wednesday on a welfare check of a man who lived on the 14th floor of the Barton Tower. By the time police arrived, the victim, identified by the Marion County Coroner's Office as Forest Hill Jr., was found dead on the scene. Lying in his own bed, with blood splattered around the apartment, Hill's family said the 65-year-old appeared to have been beaten and left for dead. "It hurts so bad. It just makes me numb to everything," said the victim's niece Shanta Lewis. "My brother meant the world to me," said the victim's sister Sherece Hill. Sherece Hill said her brother had only recently moved into the Barton Tower along Massachusetts Avenue. Before his death, the victim did have a lengthy criminal history. "Everybody makes mistakes. He got out of prison three months ago and wanted to change his life. He was going to church and (was) excited about this apartment," said the victim's sister Sherry Tate. 2 men sentenced after giving kid meth, sexually abusing them on camera By the time office staff and IMPD officers found Hill, he was unresponsive, according to police reports. It's still not clear how long he had been dead before being discovered or who took his life. "Whoever did this, I hope they catch them and they pay for what they did because that was my friend," said Torrence Johnson. Johnson said when Forest moved into the Barton Tower, he warned his friend that the property, which is overseen by the Indianapolis Housing Agency, could be dangerous. "I said, 'You be careful,'" said Johnson. "That was my last words to him just yesterday." While there is security at the front desk of the tower and video cameras throughout the property, Forest Hill's family thinks he would have been safer in prison. "I would have begged him to go back to prison than to come and live here," said Sherece. Forest Hill's homicide took place 17 months after his nephew, Michael Shoffner, was shot to death on Dexter Street in April 2023. No arrests were ever made in that case. Forest Hill's family hopes the latest homicide in the Barton Tower doesn't go unsolved. "My family is hurting all over again. We can't catch a break," said Lewis.
