INDIANAPOLIS -- As part of the campaign's recent rollout of plans, the Republican gubernatorial campaign of U.S. Senator Mike Braun, R-Ind. and Micah Beckwith released its healthcare plan on Thursday, aiming to fight the state's high healthcare costs. This comes after Braun's campaign released its education plan, its agriculture plan and its plan for property taxes. Braun previously told FOX59/CBS4 that workforce and health care are the two issues he hears about the most from Hoosier voters. Braun was voted as Indiana’s Republican candidate for governor in May. Braun will face Democratic challenger Jennifer McCormick and Libertarian Donald Rainwater in November’s general election. In a news release unveiling the campaign's healthcare plan, Braun said that the high cost of healthcare puts a strain on families, as well as employers. ‘On the trail’ with the candidates for governor “As a main street entrepreneur who took on rising healthcare costs in my own business, I know firsthand that the high cost of healthcare is a glaring weakness when it comes to attracting new companies and new residents, along with the burden on hardworking Hoosiers and business owners," Braun said in the release. "Solutions such as transparency, innovation, competition, and empowering consumers are not hard to figure out, and I will provide the leadership required to deliver solutions to lower the cost of healthcare for Hoosiers." Braun's healthcare plan consists of six key areas, including: Improve quality The campaign said that by prioritizing quality primary care, investing in patient data and supporting the state's healthcare workforce, Indiana can improve its healthcare quality. This includes: Expanded primary care options for Medicaid Reduce patient reliance on emergency rooms Prohibiting non-compete clauses Eliminating red tape for in-state doctors Lower costs The campaign aims to increase options for employer-sponsored health coverage as well as focusing efforts on rising drug costs and surprise medical bills. Some of the items the campaign proposes to combat healthcare costs include: Expanding the ICHRA Tax Credit Protection from all surprise medical bills Establish a long-term care savings account Zero tolerance for waste, fraud and abuse Enhance transparency The campaign aims to promote "sweeping price transparency legislation" to make sure patients have prices that are "predictable, accessible and useful." This involves: Closing loopholes in its prior authorization reforms and instituting site neutral prices, giving patients the chance to choose the location where they get healthcare. Providing good faith estimates of a patient's out of pocket costs for the services associated with an inpatient or outpatient treatment. A predictable and timely billing process for medical expenses. Expand access The campaign would help create solutions that increase access to healthcare for Indiana residents. This would be achieved through: Expanding the state's right to try statute. Improve access and affordability in rural areas through telehealth for Medicaid and increasing rural OB access Support local providers through incentivizing new primary care facilities Promote wellness The campaign would promote wellness through access to preventative care and screening while encouraging Indiana residents to live healthier. The campaign would do this through: Studying wellness and long-term health outcomes Codify no-cost access to preventative services Increase competition The campaign aims to cut red tape and barriers, making sure Indiana residents are not harmed by consolidation or overregulation. This includes: Requiring private equity mergers and acquisitions in the healthcare industry to be approved by the attorney general. Increase competition by removing barriers to entry. In a statement from Beckwith, Braun's lieutenant governor, on social media, he said the plan builds on "proven ideas" while prioritizing transparency, lower costs and patient choice. Braun, McCormick to participate in FOX59/CBS4 gubernatorial debate "Mike Braun and Micah Beckwith know what it takes to fix our broken healthcare system, and this plan puts Indiana on the right track for affordable, accessible and patient-centered care," Beckwith's statement read. "Together, they are fighting to bring freedom and opportunity to every corner of the Hoosier state! Let’s make Indiana a leader in healthcare reform!" According to the Indiana Secretary of State’s office, Hoosiers are able to register to vote for the 2024 General Election through Oct. 7.
