GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — A college campus is immersing students, staff and faculty into Hispanic culture as UNCG hosts nearly two dozen events for Hispanic Heritage Month. It aims to build a sense of community for students on campus. “From the food, the dances, the tradition. It's just everything,” said Tania Portillo Hernandez, a UNCG sophomore. It's about conversations, connections and culture. That’s UNCG’s Office of Intercultural Engagement’s goal while hosting a month filled with events for Hispanic Heritage Month, targeting its Hispanic/Latinx population and the entire campus. "Now, we have 17.1% here. It's also resembled out in the community. So I think everywhere they're walking to, they're seeing greater opportunities for them to celebrate culture, whether it be through traditional wear or participating at different events ... Anywhere that they go, they see themselves,” Assistant Director of the OIE Marisa González said. Churros with the chancellor is one of those many scheduled events. It's a chance to eat, laugh and chat about things Hispanic/Latinx students on campus might be facing. Sophomore Tania Portillo Hernandez says these events help the campus feel like a home away from home. “Very comforting. I am a ... first-generation Salvadorean American student ... I'm the first person in my family to go to college ... You come in kind of confused, and you don't know what to do. You don't know how to navigate this new world of academics, of extracurriculars, social life, spirituality,” Hernandez said. Hernandez is an ambassador for Herencia, which is a Hispanic/Latinx student collective within the university’s office of intercultural engagement that helped plan all these events.  She said representation matters and wants students to know they’re not alone. “I'm providing that comfort to other people and support that was given to me,” Hernandez said. Senior and Herencia intern Abigail Herrera-Leal said when students attend these events, they often uncover shared experiences.   “My mom is undocumented. My grandma doesn't know how to read and write. So the fact that I'm here on a full ride, the fact that I was interviewed at Harvard two weeks ago, the fact that I'm an intern, the fact that I was a Spartan guide and a captain, the fact that I've made a huge impact on this campus says a lot to the strength of the Latino community,” Herrera-Leal said. The Hispanic Heritage Month events curated for campus, range from discussions, panels, a book signing, dancing and a talent show also highlighting campus organizations. “We all support each other. A lot of us have gone through similar experiences ... Even filling out our FAFSA is hard for us ... Being away from our family is really hard for us because ... we're a very close-knit community,” Herrera-Leal said. “So that's the community that we try to make here” UNCG’s OIE saw more than 500 students come out for its Hispanic Heritage Month kick-off event. It was a record-breaking number of students for the annual event. A calendar with the scheduled events for the month-long celebration of culture can be found on UNCG’s OIE’s website.
